Water Outreach Program

The Water Outreach Projects has four elements:

Health and Hygiene lessons will also be provided which will incorporate Bible stories in a fun, VBS-style format. The Water Outreach Project has the possibility of changing entire communities through the provision of clean water, good health habits, and proper sanitation.

  1. Dear Prayer Partners,

Thank you for your willingness to keep us all as a part of your prayer life for the next 10 days or so. Please reply back that you have received my email so that I know I have your address correct and your email provider is not dumping me into your spam. Our intent is to communicate with you each day of the trip provided the wifi at our bed and breakfast is working efficiently.

I thought I would give you some background about our trip to Nicaragua which is a water outreach project. For all of us except our team leader from MOST this project is a new experience. The project consists of two parts--providing health and hygiene education to both adults and children and giving Sawyer water filters to provide clean potable water in communities without a clean water source. Our team will also be providing skylights to the families who receive the water filters.

The Lutheran Church-Canada began the Nicaraguan mission in 1997 after receiving an invitation to share the gospel. The Iglesia Luterana Sinodo de Nicaragua (ILSN) was established in 2008. In 2012 Francisco Mojica became the Mission Team Coordinator for ILSN and will be our volunteer coordinator during our stay. We will be working in the communities of La cartonera and Maranonal spending 2 days in each community and staying in Leon.

A combination of native customs and Catholicism has resulted in a culture of fiestas based on honoring of saints. Every city in Nicaragua has its own patron saint--some towns even share saints. The people engage in annual festivals honoring their saints which are a time of joy and fun and usually begin with a parade where a statute of the patron saint is displayed. Traditional dances, plays and ceremonies can also be part of the festivities. Rockets and firecrackers are exploded and drinking and feasting add to the merriment.

Interesting is the fact that today less than 60% of the population is Roman Catholic while nearly 25% is Protestant and about 15% is not religious. The population is nearly 70% mestizo (mixed Amerindian and white), 17% white, 9% black and 5% Amerindian.

Now that you have background for our trip, please pray for the team members:
that everyone remains healthy the rest of the week as we prepare to travel to Nicaragua on Monday.
that the Lord will give all of us a servant attitude and humility
ability to show God's compassion and love
    for patience and team unity

Pray for the people we will meet:
that they will be open our assistance and teaching
that the Holy Spirit will work in their lives during our time with them and after we leave

Pray for our safety as we travel when we are in airports, traveling to our hotel and to the communities in which we will serve.
Pray God's protection some sickness and accidents
Pray for God's protection from mosquito born diseases including Zika virus and Denge fever

God's blessings and thank you again for keeping us in your prayers
